Mac pro mid 2010 thunderbolt display

Your Answer

Since your mini-DisplayPort Mac mini is small enough to unplug and carry around, you might try taking it to your nearest Apple Store and asking if you can plug it in.

Depending on the staff at the store, you might not find anyone who'll go for it. If you judge that the staff is resistant, you might try beng a little more tricky, and ask if you can plug your unidentified computer in, to see how it works with the monitor. This is easier with a laptop, since the Thunderbolt models look the same as the Unibodies. The mini has an optical drive; the Thunderbolt mini doesn't.

That first one should mean that a thunderbolt equipped display can still understand a simple DisplayPort signal coming from an older Mac at least that's what I understood.

How do I make the Mac Mini compatible with the Thunderbolt Display.

The PCI express part of the protocol is what enables all the other bits in the display - it's a generic protocol that is normally used for adding expansion cards that support a wide range of technologies. You can thick of this display as containing a load of PCI express cards at the end of a cable that support things like FireWire, Ethernet, iSight etc.

Apple Thunderbolt Display: Unboxing & Review

However, based on the info so far, it might be that a thunderbolt-enabled mac can drive a displayport display but not the other way round. That would really limit the upgrade possibilities. On 15" and 17" MacBook Pros and iMacs, the main screen will continue to function. Despite having two Thunderbolt ports, the 27" iMac can still only use two external displays, regardless of whether they are daisy chained or plugged in to separate ports. Though it has two ports, both are wired to a single Light Ridge controller, so there are only two DisplayPort channels total. What is really going to rub folks the wrong way, we suspect, is that the Thunderbolt Display is not configured to work with a miniDP display plugged in to its Thunderbolt port.

It wouldn't be surprising if more than one user with an existing 27" Cinema Display or other miniDP display got a Thunderbolt-equipped Mac and ordered a Thunderbolt display expecting to be able to add the miniDP display at the end of the chain.

Adding a miniDP display at the end of the chain works with other Thunderbolt peripherals that have downstream ports, so it's not a technical limitation of the spec. A more unfortunate side effect, we believe, is that not working according to the spec will add consumer confusion and hamper what is beginning to be a wider rollout of the technology in the PC industry.
